CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Hui Zhong is the western order but for clarification, I'll be referring to him as Zhong Hui within the app. (Since Hui Zhong sounds a little weird to me and he'll always refer to himself in the Eastern order.) He also has a courtesy name, "Shiji" which is used by close friends and family.
AGE: The games don't give him a canon age, but he's estimated to be in his early twenties. Historically, he died when he was 39.
CANON: Dynasty Warriors

CANON HISTORY:

I have a few links! Here's his Dynasty Warriors wiki and the real Zhong Hui's wiki

Dynasty Warriors is (loosely) based off of the Three Kingdoms era in real life Chinese history. Events that don't get covered in the game are assumed to happen just like they did in history. So, Zhong Hui's life mirrors his historical counterpart.

Summarizing his role within the game:

» In the game, the first battle that he appears in is Wuzhang Plains. While Zhong Hui himself doesn't play a major role here, I will note that this battle is lead by Sima Yi and later on down the road, Zhong Hui eventually works for the Sima family and even helps both Sima sons― Sima Shi and Sima Zhao by providing his insight and giving them tactics.

» It's during Shu's fourth attempt at invading Wei do we get to see his rivalry with veteran officer Deng Ai. Despite being well respected for his countless deeds, Zhong Hui looks down on him, thinking that he's just an old general. While they were talking about a strategy, Deng Ai suggests that they observe the enemy and that he will take a look. Zhong Hui then accuses Deng Ai of "trying to steal all the glory" so he goes out instead. Later on, the veteran general realizes that the main commander of the Shu army― Jiang Wei is no where to be spotted. He senses that he's planning an ambush and realizing that Zhong Hui is in danger, he goes out to save him.

» Dynasty Warriors 8 has him siding with Sima Zhao when the emperor of Wei― Cao Mao attempts a coup d'état against the Sima family. Finding the emperor to be foolish, Zhong Hui does not hesitate help out and does not think it's wrong in the slightest to seize power from someone as incompetent as Cao Mao.

» After Sima Zhao rises in power, Zhuge Dan not being able to stand it ends up rebelling against Wei and allies himself with Wu. Zhong Hui accompanies Sima Zhao to put down the rebellion against his former officer. Historically, Zhong Hui writes secret letters and convinces officers who were serving under Zhuge Dan to defect over to Sima Zhao's side.

» In the year 263 AD is when Shu finally falls to Wei. In retaliation for the countless attacks on their country, Wei finally strikes back. Many officers, including Zhong Hui participate in this battle and he leads his own army of men to march on Shu's capital Chengdu. Eventually, the emperor of Shu, Liu Shan realizes that his country does not have the resources to fight back. So to save his people, he humbly surrenders to Sima Zhao, putting an end to the country of Shu.

» Seeing Deng Ai getting treated so well by Sima Zhao causes him to resent the older officer even more. His anger finally reaches it's peak when he learns that Deng Ai became the prefect of Chengdu. Feeling like he wasn't getting rewarded properly for his accomplishments causes Zhong Hui to snap and he rebels against Sima Zhao.

» Jiang Wei, the former officer of the fallen Shu is actually the one that incites Zhong Hui into rebelling. After Wei took over Shu, the two officers became close friends. While Zhong Hui's always had ambitions, it's due to Jiang Wei's influence that he ends up rebelling. The two team up to go against Wei and together, they form a plot to get Deng Ai arrested. (Note: The expansion pack of Dynasty Warriors 8 does contradict history and instead, Deng Ai ends up escaping with the help of another Wei officer, Wen Yang. 8 also weirdly has Zhong Hui and Jiang Wei teaming up with Wu for the rebellion which never happened. 7's is actually more accurate where it's just Jiang Wei and Zhong Hui running the rebellion. So for the sake of regains and for future games to depict this correctly, I won't be going with 8's version of his rebellion if possible!)

» The rebellion is quickly put down. The soldiers who aren't very loyal to either Jiang Wei or Zhong Hui end up defecting over to Wei. Historically, there was a mutiny that took place and it both Jiang Wei and Zhong Hui ended up getting killed in it. Both 7 & 8 have Jiang Wei giving up once he sees his former lord, Liu Shan participating in suppressing the rebellion. Zhong Hui always ends up getting executed for his treason.

CANON PERSONALITY:
The first thing that anyone will notice about Zhong Hui is how ridiculously arrogant he is. It doesn't help that he makes zero attempt at hiding his ego and is constantly bragging about himself and his deeds. In his mind, he truly believes that he's the absolute best and brightest of his generation. It's evident in most of his battle quotes, in which he's usually flaunting about how great he is. His ego is so bad that he honestly believes that his side will always emerge victorious just because he participated in the battle. Should something go wrong, he will do whatever he can to deflect the blame off of himself. Even if proven wrong, he can't fathom the thought of himself ever making an error because he thinks that he is incapable of making mistakes. He even calls himself "The Chosen One" because he believes that he destined for greatness and that he will be the one to lead his country into a shining future.

Even though his arrogance is insufferable, he does have the skills to back it up. He's well known for his studious nature, and was actually a pretty damn good tactician. He has a keen skill to read the battlefield and provided his lord― Sima Zhao, with battle strategies. He was noted to have been very intelligent as a child and had a sharp mind. Supposedly, he received "special training" when he was young. While the details of his training were never explicitly stated within the game (and considering Zhong Hui's personality, the fact that he could be exaggerating is also a strong possibility.) it is implied that he is a hard worker that did a lot of studying to become the talented individual that he is. Along with that, it's also stated that he's a skilled poet. In the game, there are generic foot soldiers that you can speak with and every so often, they will provide gossip about the officers. One of the foot soldiers mentions that Zhong Hui likes to gather other scholars and talk about literature together.

Not only is he arrogant, but he's also extremely self centered. It's all about him and everything should lead back to him. Even when he attempts to praise someone, he assumes that their hard work was just an effort to get him fired up. It's an attitude like this that causes him to look down on others and believes that he is better than everyone else. Because of this, he doesn't have a good reputation among most of the officers and they tend to gossip about how obnoxious he is. So while he is talented, it's his terrible attitude that will end up causing his downfall later on.

"Let's go! Soon everything will be ours!" Is a quote that's very fitting for his mindset. Zhong Hui enjoys basking in fame and is always seeking glory. Just the thought of someone else taking away the spotlight will cause him to become livid. When his sworn rival – Deng Ai prepares a strategy to go into battle, Zhong Hui calls him out and accuses him of trying to steal all of the glory. Despite that not being Deng Ai's intentions in the slightest. He's an attention seeker and is always looking for ways to outshine everyone. Should he make an accomplishment, he will absolutely let it be known to the world and will not hesitate to brag about it.

Going along with how he can't stand the thought of someone else stealing the spotlight from him, Zhong Hui gets jealous very easily. He's a prideful young man, so he takes it personally if he feels like someone is trying to one up him. Deng Ai who was mentioned above, is a old veteran officer who is very well respected among the troops. Zhong Hui is one of the few people who looks down upon him and because of the older man's accomplishments and prestige, he becomes obsessed with trying to prove that he's better than Deng Ai. His resentment towards the older general runs so deep that seeing him getting rewarded for his accomplishments is a good part of the reason why he ends up rebelling. Once his jealousy is set into motion, it absolutely consumes him.

It's easy to set his temper off. Zhong Hui likes to pretend as though he can keep his cool but that couldn't be any more farther from the truth. Should someone insult him or his intelligence, he's upset in an instant and will do what it takes to prove that person wrong. He also shows no mercy to his enemies. When a former officer of Wei betrays them, Zhong Hui states that he would much rather execute any traitors rather than spare them.

Considering that Zhong Hui sees himself as being above everyone else, he's not a loyal vassal to have around. He believes that his talents are far too great to serve underneath a lord and that he should be the one in charge. Sima Zhao's wife– Wang Yuanji, sees right through his ambitions and is one of the first people to predict his actions. She proves to be right, as later on he teams up with former Shu officer– Jiang Wei and rebels against Sima Zhao. The reason for why he rebels is never fully explored, but it's heavily implied that it was due to his own selfishness and his pride for himself.

He takes pride in a lot of things, but one of the things that he values more than anything is his ambition. In fact, it's one of the few things that he's loyal to. He wants the greatest achievements in his life and aims to be at the top. Unfortunately, being so ambitious is also one of his greatest weaknesses. Even when being lead to his execution, Zhong Hui faces death with dignity while stating that he "simply followed his ambitions" and that he didn't regret a single thing.

Underneath all of that arrogance, a surprising character trait about him is how bashful he gets when expressing intimate adoration for someone. The moment that he says anything like "I want to you to stand by my side" he immediately gets embarrassed and flustered. This has also been shown in both Dynasty Warriors 7 & 8: Empires games. Should the player character pursue a marriage with him, he gets easily embarrassed around his spouse. Even in his marriage dialogue, he tends to say arrogant things but it's suggested that he acts that way around his spouse in an attempt to hide his bashful side. When he says something sweet and loving, he'll immediately follow it up with something egotistic. In a lot ways, he comes across as being a tsundere because of this. He also doesn't do well with people flirting with him. In Warriors Orochi 3, Zhong Hui actually spends a whole stage trying to run away from Okuni; a girl who thought he was cute and attempted to hit on him.

While there's no denying that Zhong Hui is a grade A douche, there have been some moments where he's shown a softer side that's rarely ever seen. Even with the people that dislike him, there are still a good majority of the soldiers that do like him. When speaking to a private one of them says "Zhong Hui was actually well-liked by many of the troops. It may be hard to believe, but he was rather kind to us all." The games never dig deep into that side of his, but from this, we can infer that he's good to his underlings and people that he legitimately cares about. Some more of his marriage dialogue in the Empires games also confirms this. When not embarrassed, he's been shown to be kind to his spouse and praises them. Should one finish a mission while married to Zhong Hui, he says this once it's completed: "I am simply glad we made it through unscathed. I was quite worried about that the entire time." With that being said, he does express care and concern for those close to him. He's just not the best at expressing those said feelings.

All in all, Zhong Hui does have a lot terrible traits but once you dive (really) deep into his personality he's not that bad of a person.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

★ In both Dynasty Warriors 7 & 8 Zhong Hui's weapon of choice is five swords that float around him. So yes, he has the power to summon flying swords. It's never stated how he's able to do this (telekinetic powers most likely? Although the game never outright says) but at his command they slash and hack at enemies in the air. (Here is a video for reference!)

★ Every character in the Warriors series has special attacks called musous. How they work is that they build up throughout the course of combat. Once you fill up a character's gauge, they unleash those special powerful attacks onto the enemy. In Zhong Hui's case he has two of them! The first one is called Quake Blade and he summons a bunch of dark phantom swords from the ground. The second one is called Steel Fury in which he summons even more phantom swords, but instead concentrates them into one sharp piercing attack. (Here is another video for reference if my wording sounds weird!)

★ Along with making his swords float, he was also shown to be holding a sword in a cut scene. Characters in Dynasty Warriors are efficient in different types of weapons. In his case, he's good with swords. Likewise since he's a character from this series, he's also good in combat like the rest of them. He's athletic and capable of running on foot for long distances. He also knows how to ride horses.

★ Not only is he good in combat but he also has a sharp mind. It's been said that he has the ability to read the battlefield and was known for being a good tactician. He's talented at coming up with military strategies in order to outsmart the enemy and his insight as helped his lords out numerous times.

★ Zhong Hui is also a skilled poet. Because of his education, he's proficient at reciting poetry.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Leon Zhong
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Not many differences! His hair is a darker shade of brown and instead of his eyes being a gray color, they're brown. He also no longer has a ponytail and instead keeps his hair short.

AU HISTORY:

(Everything in regards to his family and guardianship, I have permission from Syaoran Li's player [personal profile] cardcaptured ♥)

Born as Leon Zhong, he's the only child of a wealthy, prestigious family in Hong Kong. His dad is the owner of a large, well known technology company that specializes in computers, laptops and cellphones. The company has been around for a few generations and was started by Leon's great grandfather. Because of how long they've been in business, the Zhong family not only have a high status in Hong Kong but are also very well known in in the business world in general. One of their partnerships includes business dealings with the Sonozaki family's canned meat company ( [personal profile] promisedyou, with permission). Through rich people business parties, he became acquainted with the future heiress― Mio. They also have a countless number of employees working for them, one of them being Li-Na's older brother ( [personal profile] invocate, with permission) who worked as an electrical engineer.

His family has several connections, but they are and forever closely tied with the Li family. Leon and Xiaolang's mother are sisters, making the two of them cousins. Along with that, their fathers were also close friends and they would eventually marry the two sisters. Because of their friendship and family relationship, the Li and Zhong family became close knit business partners. When Xiaolang's dad passed away, Leon's dad was stricken with grief since he lost a good friend but he continued on, determined to make his business even more of a success to honor his friend.

Despite growing up as an only child, Leon never felt lonely. He's always had a close bond with the Li cousins. The sisters would always dote on him at parties, but he was particularly close to Xiaolang. Being the only boys in the family and having similar mindsets on education (along with both of them being tsundere grumps...) they grew close despite the gap in their ages. While Leon would never actually admit this out loud, he views Xiaolang as a younger brother and would do anything to protect him.

Even though both of his parents are loving at heart, they were strict on him and his education. Wanting to groom him to be the perfect heir for their company, Leon had to study hard even as a child. At a young age, he was noted to have been a brilliant kid, maybe even considered a child prodigy. Throughout his life, he had nothing but A+ grades and became a successful honor student. He would eventually graduate at the top of his class as valedictorian. However, his constant success in life caused his ego to blow up and he became quite arrogant because of it. Although they were strict on him, Leon knew that it was all for the sole purpose of his future so he didn't care and in fact, he actually kind of enjoyed the challenge. He's been trained on business management, technology and is fluent in Cantonese and English. He also knows a good amount of Japanese due to his company have several business deals in Japan, but he does stumble on his Japanese and is still learning how to become fluent in the language. Not only were they strict on his mental fortitude, they also enrolled him into fencing classes for physical training. Because of this, he's also became skilled in fencing.

One day while he was still in high school, his class went on a trip to do volunteer work at an animal shelter. While working at the shelter, he happened to come across a small white poodle puppy who had yet been adopted. One look into her eyes and he instantly fell in love. He immediately adopted the puppy and gave her the name "Jasmine". She became one of his closest companions and he loves her to bits. To this day, he still spoils her rotten and even throws birthday parties for her because he's that embarrassing...

Once he graduated high school, Leon wanted to study abroad in order to expand his horizons. That attitude impressed his parents and with that, they realized that he truly was thinking of the future for their company and would have no trouble leading it. They gleefully granted his wish. With his parent's hope, Leon also made a promise to himself that he would expand their company and start a branch in the United States. Upon hearing that her sister was planning on sending her son to Recolle, Xiaolang's mother had the idea to send her son along with Leon. Not wanting her son to live all alone, Leon's mother happily agreed to the idea and Leon also accepted. Of course, he wouldn't admit it out loud but living with his little cousin also made him happy. So together with Xiaolang and Jasmine, the three of them moved to Recolle to start their new life. Together, they've lived in Recolle for about a year now and they live an apartment that's close by the university. Along with being a student, Leon also doubles up as Xiaolang's guardian does his best to make sure that his cousin has a good life and that he's able to open up to people like his mother had wanted.

Upon enrolling in the university, Leon's competitive side gets the better of him. He's in a totally new country, so what better way to prove his skills than to graduate at the top of his class here as well? With his arrogant nature, Leon has made a few rivals and kinda sorta friends. His upperclassman Byakuya Kirigiri is also a business major and Leon doesn't care in the slightest that he's older, he still wants to show him up and frequently challenges him ( [personal profile] falsepretentious, with permission). Kaede Akamatsu is another fellow valedictorian but his rivalry with her is more on the friendly side ( [personal profile] spiritoso, with permission). His eternal rival will always and forever be with Kiyotaka Ishida ( [personal profile] steadycourse, with permission). The two have never got along since the day they met and are constantly butting heads with each other. They both know exactly what buttons to push to make each other mad and even get competitive over the most petty things. During his time in Recolle, he did date fellow student, Clover Geteilt ( [personal profile] servileness, with permission) for 3 months and a half. They met through sharing a mutual class and their pretentious English essays. However, due to their personalities clashing along with a mix of Clover's insecurities, they ended up breaking things off.

AU PERSONALITY:

» At his core, Leon still shares a lot of the same personality traits as his canon counterpart. He became arrogant due to his constant success in his educational career. He's still a prideful young man and lowering his pride is the last thing he would do. It's not hard to upset him and he's quick to lose his temper.

» The absolute biggest change in his personality is that he shows his softer side much more often. Having grown up from a loving family, he's better at expressing his care and concern. This is mostly in regards to people he's related to. His family is of the utmost importance and he doesn't hesitate to look out for them. Xiaolang in particular. He's always been close with him but with his role as his guardian, he's especially caring. (Even if he still still a tsundere about it) With this, he's not as selfish as he is in canon.

» He loves animals and claims to like them more than most humans. Dogs are his favorite and he's especially attached to his poodle; Jasmine. However, he does enjoy the company of all animals. He's the type of person that would feed stray cats on his lunch break at school if he happens to spot one.

» Another huge change is his expertise in technology. Because he wasn't born in the year 225 AD like his historical counterpart, he's obviously fully aware of advanced technology. Also since he's the heir to his father's company, he knows a great deal about computers and programming. He knows how to take apart a computer and fix it right back up.

» Due to his family constantly (albeit jokingly) telling him that he needs to find someone and get married, he gets extremely embarrassed at anything dealing with romance. He gets really flustered and should it get brought up, he'll do whatever he can to change the topic. Likewise, he also gets really bashful if someone attempts to flirt with him.

» Going along with the above, he gets embarrassed much more easily. He has a secret love for video games that he rarely shares with anyone else. Despite it, he does view it as being childish and wants to appear like the perfect honor student. However, he still cannot truly hide his love for games and will secretly buy them or disguise himself should be visit the arcade.

» Because of his loving family, Leon doesn't have as much of a Chosen One complex that he does in canon. While he still is arrogant and competitive, he doesn't think of himself as some kind of god that will rule the world.

» He gets really competitive when it comes to grades. What he desires is to graduate at the top of his class in a completely foreign country. To prove himself and to also impress his parents and make Hong Kong proud.

» In contrast to canon, Leon's goals are somewhat different and less selfish. He wants to prove to his family that he could be a heir to the company. Above anything else, he wants to make his parents proud. He also wants to build upon their company and make sure that it's even more successful.
